Love is the central theme of most stories we hear — whether in books, movies, or everyday life. It touches the heart of every person. We find deep joy in being loved, in receiving affection, and in experiencing someone’s selfless care. Why does love attract us so deeply?
Because to love is natural.
Who Are We Really?
According to the Bhagavad Gita and other Vedic scriptures, we are not just temporary physical bodies. We are souls — ātma — eternal, conscious individuals. The soul is described as chaitanya-svarūpa — full of consciousness. Consciousness means the ability to feel joy and sorrow, honor and insult, hope and despair. It is because of this consciousness that we long for true emotional connection — for love.
Deep down in our hearts, we do not crave just material pleasures. Though we live in a physical body and often seek to satisfy its senses and desires, our deeper need is something more subtle — the desire to love and be loved purely.
The Search for Pure Love
In this material world, we are constantly trying to find that one relationship, that one connection, which brings complete satisfaction. But no matter how hard we try, there remains an emptiness. This is because material relationships are temporary and based on external conditions — age, beauty, wealth, status, and so on.
But pure love is not based on any of these. It is the natural state of the soul. It exists eternally within us — it simply needs to be awakened.
Who Is the Perfect Person to Love?
To truly love, we need not just the capacity to love but also the perfect person to direct our love toward — someone who is eternal, pure, and conscious like us, but also perfect in every way.
The Vedas declare:
nityo nityānāṁ cetanaś cetanānām eko bahūnāṁ yo vidadhāti kāmān
(Kaṭha Upaniṣad 2.2.13)“Among all eternal, conscious beings, there is one Supreme eternal conscious being who is fulfilling the desires of all others.”
This Supreme Person is Krishna. He is not just God in an abstract sense — He is the source of all souls, the perfect, original person, and the embodiment of pure love.
Love for Krishna Is Already Within Us
This love is not something external to be gained from elsewhere. It is already within the heart of every soul. As stated in the Chaitanya Charitāmṛta (Madhya-līlā 22.107):
nitya-siddha kṛṣṇa-prema ‘sādhya’ kabhu naya
śravaṇādi-śuddha-citte karaye udaya
“Pure love for Kṛṣṇa is eternally established in the hearts of living entities. It is not something to be gained from another source. When the heart is purified by hearing and chanting, this love naturally awakens.”
So, we don’t need to artificially manufacture love for Krishna. We only need to purify our heart — and the most effective way to do that is through Bhakti, devotional service.
The Easiest Process: Chanting the Mahamantra
Among all forms of Bhakti, the simplest and most powerful method in this age is chanting the Holy Names:
🌸
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
🌸
This Mahamantra cleanses the mirror of the heart and reawakens the natural love that lies dormant within us. As our relationship with Krishna deepens, we experience the highest satisfaction — not just temporary happiness, but eternal joy, the joy of pure love.
Conclusion
To love is not a learned behavior — it is who we are at our core. But the purest love, the love that fully satisfies the soul, can only be found when we connect with Krishna, the perfect object of love.
Let us reawaken that eternal love through hearing, chanting, and devotion — and return to our original, joyful identity as Krishna’s loving servants.
Hare Krishna.
